We are very thankful to Gaby Flavin from Sticks and Stones Education, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and our team members for collating lists of special days for Australian Early Childhood Educators. We have taken these lists and converted them into a monthly calendar format, which is available for you today as a printable PDF. This calendar is an unmissable resource that offers creative ideas for programming, ideas for intentionally incorporating an Indigenous perspective throughout the year, opportunities for sparking children’s and families’ interest, and so much more.
You might decide to display the calendar in your sign-in area or keep a copy in your diary or programming space. The wide variety of special days can help spark newsletter articles, family communications, professional development opportunities, or critical reflection topics. You may choose to celebrate some or all of these days in your service. The options are truly limitless!
As an extra perk, we have chosen to include the moon phases in the calendar in addition to the special days. Outer space and the planets are interests that our children are perpetually curious about, and this extra information helps Educators provide little astronomers with learning opportunities and perhaps inspire a year-long project as you track the phases of the moon together. This can also quickly springboard into learning about tides, gravity, and a host of other scientific inquiries.
